Bone as a cement restrictor in elbow arthroplasty.

چکیده
Elbow arthroplasty is performed less often than hip or knee arthroplasty. The most common reason for patients requiring elbow arthroplasty is chronic inflammatory joint disease, usually rheumatoid arthritis.1 Two main types of prostheses exist, linked and nonlinked. Prosthesis fixation in bone is achieved with bone cement in almost all linked and non-linked prostheses.2 Cement restrictors prevent migration of cement and ensure a good cement-bone interface by increasing the cement penetration in bone. The commercially available polyethylene and silicone restrictors are too big for the ulna, migrate, and poorly contain cement, even when used in the distal humerus.3 This article presents a technique that uses bone chips to fashion an effective cement restrictor for elbow arthroplasty.

A comparison of distal canal restrictors in primary cemented femoral hip arthroplasty.
A retrospective study evaluated 75 total hip arthroplasties performed over a 4-year period using 4 different cement restrictors. A harvested bone restrictor, polyethylene restrictor (Smith & Nephew, Richards Inc, Memphis, Tenn), Biostop G (Depuy Orthopaedics, Warsaw, Ind), and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) (Wright Medical Technology, Arlington, Tex) were compared for the percentage of failures,...
متن کاملOsteolytic changes around biodegradable cement restrictors in hip surgery
Background and purpose - Biodegradable cement restrictors are widely used in hip arthroplasty. Like others, we observed osteolytic reactions associated with a specific cement restrictor (SynPlug; made of PolyActive) and reviewed our patients. Patients and methods - We identified 703 patients with suitable radiographs from our database (2007 to 2012) who underwent cemented hip arthroplasty and r...
متن کاملCement migration after THR. A comparison of charnley elite and exeter femoral stems using RSA.
Studies using roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis (RSA) have shown that the femoral components of cemented total hip replacements (THR) migrate distally relative to the bone, but it is not clear whether this occurs at the cement-implant or the cement-bone interface or within the cement mantle. Our aim was to determine where this migration occurred, since this has important implications for ...
متن کاملThe effect of two different types of cement restrictors on the femoral cement mantle.
Cement restriction and pressurisation are helpful technical points in achieving a good cement mantle in cemented hip replacement. In this prospective study, we compared 39 cases where a Hardinge polyethylene restrictor was used and 33 cases where a bone block restrictor was used during Charnley hip replacement. The preoperative radiographs were templated, calibrated holders for the cement restr...
متن کاملIn Vitro Performance of Eight Intramedullary Cement Restrictorsin Total Hip Arthroplasty
INTRODUCTION: Contemporary cementing techniques in total hip arthroplasty include the use of a cement restrictor to occlude the intramedullary canal. In the 80 ́s occlusion of the distal intramedullary canal was done with a bone plug or by sealing with bone cement. Today, with the evolvement of biomaterials in Orthopaedic surgery numerous plug designs and materials (non-resorbable, resorbable) a...
